LATEST NEWS

This past year has been one of extensive travel, mostly to Nepal and Mongolia on consulting projects. The countries, cultures and business challenges were enjoyable and stimulating. Even the traveling (34 hours door-to-door to Kathmandu) is decent except for the airports and security hassles. From last October to this October I will have flown across the Pacific ocean 14 times.

TRAVEL STORIES

The Tales of A Road Warrior section of our website continues to grow. Some people are encouraging me to write a book of these episodes (which I will consider at some point). This is a collection of travel stories from over 30+ years rather than a blog which is more like a diary.

The other thing I do is to create a webpage for each country which is capital markets focused but also contains (at the end) local information useful to travelers . I could not find a useable restaurant map in Ulaanbataar so created my own and later found out it was being given out by both the US & UK embassies there.

ASIA 2007 - NEPAL & MONGOLIA

Much of 2007 was spent in Nepal and Mongolia on Capital Markets projects.

In Nepal the project was the automation of the Nepal Stock Exchange and the Nepal Company Registration Office. Both required managing the process from the design of RFPs to the final implementation. The RFPs were written, issued, vendors selected, contracts negotiated, systems developed and in August 2007 both systems went "live".

Nepal is a fascinating place and operating in the midst of political turmoil, strikes, and power/petrol/water shortages made it quite an adventure. In the process we worked closely with the Securities Board of Nepal (thier Securities and Exchange Commission).

The Mongolian Financial Regulatory Commission is barely a year old and charged with regulating all financial entities except banks. The task here is to write a comprehensive Information Technology Blueprint and define the requirements for an internal datbase all while FRC is organizing itself and trying to train a young and diverse staff. The top management is fully supporting the effort and moving quickly to utilize the ideas and resources we bring.

Walking to work in December and January when it was typically -25° F was a real experience. It makes you appreciate the "hardiness" and tenacity of the Mongolians.

CHICAGO AREA

In the fall we orchestrated the weekend move of a financial services company vendor from one building to another in downtown Chicago. In additon to the telecommunications and data circuit relocations we organized the physical move as well. Since companies in this industry cannot afford to be disconnected even for a day, (and vendors do not always do what they promise) the planning has to be very detailed and have backup and contingency plans in place on moving day.
